I’ve heard about the idea of picking a word for the year, but I have never done it myself. I thought I’d give it a try this year and pick one word for 2019. I really like this idea because it simplifies a whole year down to one single word. My word for 2019 is FOCUS.

My personality type is the kind that always has to be busy. I hate sitting still for long periods of time and I thrive off of feeling productive. The only problem with this is that sometimes I can be so busy “doing” that I neglect really focusing on living in the PRESENT. I’m constantly planning what’s next and thinking about the future instead of concentrating on the day-by-day.

Having said this, there are 6 different areas in my life where I want to increase my focus:

Relationships. Over the past couple of years, I have really learned how much of an influence those around you have on your own attitude and mindset. One fact that I have heard multiple times is “you are an average of the five people you are around the most.” Personally, I have found this to be very true. As those five people in my life have been altered these past few years, I have noticed shifts in my attitude (both good and bad), depending on who was in that close circle of individuals. This year, I am striving to really focus on spending time with people that truly make me feel good, lift me up, and support my journey.

Training. Currently, my goal is to focus more on functional training and all around athleticism. I haven’t had a set focus in the weight room for a little while up until recently, so I’m excited to have something to work on again. I also want to emphasize recovery more, especially since I’ve had to deal with injuries in the past. Overall, I want to have fun with my workouts and try new things, all while continuing to make progress and improvements.

Positivity. It’s so easy nowadays to get wrapped up in all the negative things going on in our lives. By doing this, we often get so caught up in what is going wrong that we miss just how many things are actually going right. I have noticed my own negativity is especially emphasized when hanging around people that are also negative. This ties back to focusing on filling my life with healthy relationships. This year I want to focus on appreciating the positive things that are happening in my life and learning how to worry less about what might not be going just the way I want it to.

Career. I just graduated this past December and already have a lot going on job-wise. I have two part time jobs, one in athletics with my university and the other at a financial advising firm, in addition to ForzaFit. I have been blessed with these great opportunities and really want to focus on making productivity and efficiency priorities in order to make the most out of my time. I also want to absorb as much information as possible from both jobs in order to help direct where I want to go in the future.

Personal Time. This one is often very easy to neglect. I have struggled with this in the past because I feel like I always have to be doing something, but it is very important to take time for yourself each day. It is beneficial for your mental health in addition to your physical health. Whether it be by taking 15 minutes or 2 hours to pause and step away from your busy schedule, it can make a difference. It gives you a chance to breathe and reset your mind to focus on your priorities.

Spirituality. This year, I want to focus on making more time for my relationship with Christ. One way I’m doing this is by making it a habit to start my mornings off with listening to a podcast of a sermon on my drive to work. It really helps me to direct my focus in the right direction for the rest of the day.

These are just a few areas in my life that I am looking to really develop and make improvements on. I hope this got you thinking a little bit about what you want to FOCUS on this year: how are you going to make yourself better in 2019? And maybe you even have your own word for 2019. What’s the word that you are going to live by for the year?
